FAMILY FUTURES
AND NPP

Family Futures is a specialist organisation based in London dedicated to supporting children, young people and families who have experienced early life trauma, neglect or abuse. Established in the late 1990s, it has become known for its pioneering, evidence-based therapeutic approaches, particularly for children who are adopted, in foster care or living in kinship care. Family Futures’ work blends clinical expertise with a deep understanding of the emotional and developmental needs of children affected by adversity.

They offer a holistic, multidisciplinary approach combining occupational therapy, psychotherapy, creative arts therapy and family therapy through their Complex Trauma Service, focusing on helping children regulate emotions, build resilience and develop healthy relationships.

They conduct comprehensive assessments to understand a child’s developmental history, trauma impact and current needs; and then use these assessments to create tailored intervention plans that guide therapeutic work.

The model they have developed, Neuro-Physiological Psychotherapy (NPP), is grounded in attachment theory, recognising that secure relationships are the foundation for emotional and social development. Their neurodevelopmental perspective considers how trauma affects brain development, sensory processing and learning, and integrates strategies to help children rebuild neural pathways for self-regulation and trust.

NPP involves parents and carers as active participants in therapy, ensuring that progress is supported at home, and offers guidance, coaching and emotional support to caregivers.

Family Futures also engage with policymakers to improve post-adoption and post-fostering support services. And they campaign for systemic changes that prioritise the long-term wellbeing of children in care.

Family Futures has helped hundreds of families navigate the challenges of parenting children with complex needs. Their integrated approach has been shown to improve emotional regulation, attachment security and family stability. They have contributed significantly to the development of trauma-informed care in the UK.
